Review: Out of the attic

so this is more of a rant, than review, and beware of spoilers !

i didn't know where AN was going to take this one
and while I thought it was better than the first
i was highly disappointed in this as a whole

reasons i liked it:
- stuff happened (i feel like book 1 was so stale)
- timelines were right

reasons i disliked it:
- malcolm is a jerk. and i don't know where this came from. he's being raised by a sweet woman, you'd think he would get his mannerisms from her. but nope. hes becoming this snotty little dude and i can't figure out his motive for it. when he's older, sure, but at 5? gimme a break.
- the repetitive of his story lines and names. a painter? hello jillian. another beau? come on... plus, friends and me are wondering if the news of the ruby movie influenced his use of repeating the name.
- the nanny. look, i get that, back then, other people raised your children. however, this lady is too much for me. and corinne doesn't deserve to be a mother anyways - either you're involved in your kids life or you aren't (like garland) which is why i don't understand malcolms persona.

overall?
i was surprised how much i liked this one. i went in with a negative mindset since i hate that these are being written to begin with (well, why read them at all? you might ask ... it's because i co-run a facebook fan group and i need to know the content if i'm to co-run it properly)

the ending was predictable as the story progressed.
in a typical vca-style
which, is fine i guess, though it would be a big scandal in that time
so i hope book three captures that

also, question about book three: is there going to be multi- POVs? i feel like it's warranted, unless he gives us a short story/elilogue which captures garland's perspective on the whole thing.
or give it all from malcolms POV as a child and how he confronts both his parents? who knows.

all i do know is that i give Out of the Attic a 2.5 star as it was better than what I thought it was going to be ...

... but not as great as it was hyped to be.

Review: Kingdom of Ash

this series is done.
bittersweet if you ask me... that was a long journey

It's been almost two series since I was in this world
and I had been leaving this and Tower of Dawn at the bottom of my TBR
but i'm not sure why
jumping into the fray with these characters again was so fun

yet chaos

I did not remember anything (except the ending of EOS and of course the earlier stuff)
and no rereads or review as prep
made for a difficult read

who the hell are all these characters?!

but I figured it out along the way
tho i'm sure it would've been more emotional if I had read EOS again
*shrugs*

oh well

it was still an exciting read and I loved it

though the fact that every other book is dark coloured
and the final is this neon yellow/gold cover hurts my eyeballs

Rowan, Alien, Lysandra, Eldie … everyone's story was equally great in my eyes
though of course, pros and cons of each.

I wish this series wasn't ending, but I also think a reread is in order and that will take forever.
I am not afraid

.
.

** though this book will always hold a special place in my heart bc going to chapters to pick it up on release day was one of the first "dates" me and the boyfriend had in the beginning. <3

Review: Keepers of the Lost Cities

mmmkay so this is going to be a series review

because there are so many books

and while it's been a wonderful year reading these
breaking them down can get tricky without spoilers

so, the series goes:

Keeper of the Lost Cities,

Exile
Everblaze
Neverseen
Lodestar
Nightfall
Flashback
Legacy
(book 9)

it starts off with our Sophie.

Sophie is about to find out that her life is not what she thought it was

that she is not who she thought she was

she doesn't belong on earth, among the humans

since she is a telepath, something she has never been able to understand about herself
she then finds out her "home" is another place
and no humans allowed.

but, she isn't a human.

she was an experiment
and Sophie and her friends are about to find out the mysteries surrounding that
while also trying to figure out the mysteries of their world
and those who inhabit it

Each book, of course, takes you deeper and deeper into the story

of how and why Sophie was created
and to what end

she's a child pawn in a game of adults

but her and the gang find the strength and the courage to take matters into their own hands

I saw the spines of this on insta, i believe, and fell in love with the colour scheme. then i read the post about what the series was about.

i don't remember the first time i picked up book 1, i think it was a library book, but quickly i was putting them all on hold until i could buy them

(because i wanted the HC for the prettiness)
and when i get one, it went right to the top of my pile
needing to know what was going to happen next

each book is few hundred pages (the later ones reaching 600+)

while taking the reader on a rollercoaster of events, of emotion, of injuries, of family and loss, of family and gain, of best friends and, usually, laughter.

written as a middle grade book, the writing is very easy to get through and understand

yet Messenger tackles mature themes - like mental health - and does it in a elegant way that really makes the reader think about the characters and themselves.

it's a beautful story that keeps the readers hooked from page one

anyone who likes the Harry Potter or Pendragon arc (chosen one, magical worlds, best friends, love triangles etc) needs to grab this one asap
grab a cup of your favourite drink
and clear your schedule

ALSO

i am pleased to announce that Legacy isn't the end!
which i thought it was
and when i read the acknowledgements, i saw that it had a major cliffhanger
so ugh
but YAY
because I need more of these stories in my life

Wednesday 1 January 2020

lets talk 2020

okay so

was 2019 the best year i've had?
no.
was it better than 2018?
heck yessss.

so, fingers crossed that 2020 will be even better

i have a few goals, like i do every year
i'm going to bump up to 200 books again
but i think i'm going to regret that

i still want to write
i still will crochet (the making of product for possibly doing a craft show in the next year or so is very scary but i want to do it as  a bucket list item)
i want to get back into my scrapbooking - just for personal stuff. need to update them.
i need to keep up with the blogging/reviewing more

and by the spring, manfriend and i want to be living together
plus i have a paris/london trip coming up for my 30th in May as well

so i really feel i need to be on the ball with my time management this year
of course, it's all pending work.

i have no idea what's going to happen with my college schedules, but the community stuff should be alright ... though i've been debating on a second job lately. though what that means for my life i have no idea. it makes my brain hurt thinking about it. if manfriend and i live together, i wouldn't feel so guilty about going out because the puppy wouldn't be alone so much. so that may dictate my decision.

My december wrap up had 18 books, and a few big ones that i finally knocked off the list so yay for that!

Jan's tbr is looking pretty packed, but I don't know what i'm in the mood for
though i bought a tbr cart and i'm in love *swoons*

does anyone else feel like it's not a new year?
maybe i'm just getting old and it's just another day... who knows ...

im definitely feeling more cynical as the years go by *shrugs*

i'm hopeful for the next few months.
some big life changes should be happening
and life begins a new chapter (been in a long epilogue in 2019)

now here's to finding the motivation and commitment to having an amazing year and being productive

Enjoy whatever comes your way darlings  <3 <3
