Discussion: The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give
Angie Thomas

I just finished reading THUG, and while I wasn't too sure what I was getting into (besides the main idea that it was a reaction to the blacklivesmatter movement) I dived in with both an open mind and an open heart.

I loved every second of it.

Rough to read, and utterly heartbreaking, but it was real.

Thomas does an excellent job at just being honest. There's no "writing for the masses" here. It's a real story, told from the POV of a young lady who isn't quite sure where she fits in the world all the time.

Death is a one of those things that has no limits. It's unpredictable. But the how, the who... those factors are what this story is about. The aftermath. The "shoot now, ask questions later" (unless you have authority. then don't worry about questions)

It's a story that is going to stick in the minds of anyone who reads it.

For me, personally, it reminded me of being back in high school and having two kids being killed when I was in grade 9. They were being chased by the police and hit a tree. I don't remember a lot of the details, but I remember my friends and the school reacting to this event. I didn't know the guys personally, but the school came together.

If you want a book that will have you thinking about who you are, about what you say, about how you react and why.. then pick this one up (or put it to the top of your TBR) You will not regret it.

Review: Illuminae (book 1)

  Illuminae
  The Illuminae Files, book 1
  Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

What a wild ride. I've heard about these books forever, but now I am finally getting into them with the release of Obsidio!

I was nervous about the writing style initially, but I quickly got over that because the story was so enthralling (though it took me a sec to figure it all out)

Told from documents about an epidemic that turns war between man and machine, the readers follow a few different people as they fight to survive a mission through space (since that's where they live).

Similar to the Pixar movie Wall-e, the ship they live on has a control system that has been over-programmed, if you will, and teases the line between human and machine.

Absolutely crazy story that has your heart racing and being ripped apart simultaneously. The fact that this could all very well happen, and we could all be sent to live in space with crazy robots trying to run our lives while humans continue to try and kill each other .

I swear, we are the worst species this universe has to deal with ...

but the characters are what you fall in love with, as it is with any good story *swoons*

Gemina review coming up shortly!

March without the break

I know I say this every month lately, but where is the time going? I swear I blink and it's a new month

sheesh

March was exciting though

however, the colleges up here didn't get a break and we were all feeling the stress of it so that may have had something to do with it. hmm.

so, let's recap, shall we?

I bit the bullet and started up Netgalley for myself (TDC had one as a group but I didn't want to skew our reputation with all the YA I want)  Had two books approved and they were both only okay. Nothing special; I had higher hopes for both (details below, links provided to reviews)

Let's see what I actually read:

- (finished) the beast is an animal
- Lost boy, Found boy (netgalley: goodreads review)
- the Martian
- Broken Flower by V.C. Andrews
- the Hazel Wood (which I will soon rant about in a review because I don't get the hype?)
- Princess Diariest by Carrie Fisher (which has me bingeing Star Wars this weekend while I am home alone with the pupps)
- Bookish Boyfriends (Netgalley; goodreads reivew)
- Gemina

3 random kindle books, and 2 that I reviewed for Summer Eve's Reads

which puts me at 55 / 200 for the year!

It was an odd month.  I didn't get half the reading I wanted in, between tail end of being sick and work being crazy (and being SO tired), and hubby and i have been bingeing grays anatomy...  weird that end of the month ended up being the craziest but I got the most reading in. Science side of Tumblr, explain please?

I still have a handful of books that were on Feb/March's TBR so those will be added to the pile that I have for April

- Young Scrooge (though why i'm not reading this at xmas, who knows)
- The hate you give
- and I darken
- romeo redeemed / Juliet immortal
- time keeper / timeless
- rebel in the sand
- nevermore / enshadowed /oblivion

plus i have the next 2 books of the Man of the Month series by J. Kenner for Summer Eve's reviews.
and whatever else floats my boat on my kindle.  Work is slowing down somewhat (though I need to start grabbing what I can to save up for the summer slow months so maybe not?) but maybe weekends will be my time to binge?

I need to get better with my reviews, insert awkward laugh here. I'm so behind ...

Also, I'm trying to find more Canadian book bloggers and haven't found many (IG-ers too so leave your links below!)

but I'm thinking of starting up some kind of Hub for us Canadian bloggers - unless there's one I don't know about - Still doing some research but if any fellow Canadians are interested in joining this or hearing more about it, reach out :)

I really wanted to do Camp NaNo but no time/energy right now. Which sucks. I'm editing randomly and need a kick in the butt to sit down and finish it... hmm..

We have a new addition to our family!

This is Granite. He's a 2yo Akita Shepherd. So far he's getting along with our golden retriever, he hasn't met the chihuahua yet who is away visiting my MIL while Granite gets settled. ISN'T HE HANDSOME!? Rescue pup from the toronto humane society and we're in love with him. He's awesome *swoon*
We got him a week ago and so far so good!

Hubs wants to get a trailer (not sure if I mentioned this last month or not) but we're on the hunt for something near the US boarder  - i'm hoping on the Falls side - for the summer months.

Nothing else is new - I am excited to have more free time in a few weeks when college is over and I can be more flexible with work.

That's it for now folks! See you on the flip side ;)
